A] ORATOR / B] ORACLE / C] PSYCHOANALYSIS (+ Neuroscience)
A]n ORATOR is someone who pleads-argues for a cause with the main objective of convince-persuade listeners about an idea or concept.
Even if this definition could be a bit utopian, there is a clear need from the orator to obtain a reaction in somebody.
There is not need at this point of the project to talk about the kind of content per se, but it is more important for me to identify how the orator is able to achieve his goal.
On the other hand I think it is interesting to make an hypothesis about the fact that one thing is what we say and other what we think, in the same way an orator could be interested in convinced someone about something he do not agree with but it is useful to obtain his objective.
It is interesting to me to distinguish between the public face (the orator) and the reality behind (the person), like a mask (skills, techniques, gesture, expression...) he is using to "work".
There is a clear link (to me) between orator and knowledge in the sense that to be able to transmit properly his message needs to know with excellence what he is talking about. As well need to know how to transmit his message and how it is gonna be receive it.
B] ORACLE:
"person or agency considered to be a source of wise counsel or prophetic opinion"
The Delphic Oracle, were the Pythia (the priestess who preside over the oracle) used to to give messages (prophecy) from Apollo (Greek god of the Sun, Truth and prophecy) to the humans.
In this case the Pythia would be in some way the orator of the oracle (with the unique difference than in mythology the content was received from a god and in a general speaking and orator act on his behalf).
In a literary context, Apollo symbolize harmony, order and reason. On the other hand Dionysus (wine's god and one of his brothers) represents ecstasy and disorder.
Even if nowadays we tend to understand the characteristic between Apollo and Dionysus opposite, actually the ancient greek thought these qualities as a complementary.
I like to think at Apollo and Dionysus as two sides of the same person, Apollo corresponding with the conscious (rational, behaving, trying to control his acts) and Dionysus with the unconscious. In a similar way than an orator have both a public (who speaks for the public) and a personal sides.
C.1] PSYCHOANALYSIS.
There are two main aspects of psychoanalysis that interest me regarding the Unit3 project:
C.1.1 > Related to interaction design in general (physic or virtual) as an analysis tool able to help in the understanding of the relation between users and the art work.
What happen when a user face an installation; actions and reactions; identification of the different components/factors in the piece and what could produce on the user...
C.1.2 > I believe it is a necessary tool (even if unconscious) for an orator to be able to understand about perception, how to deliver successfully a message, how this message is gonna be received and all the whys.
On another side it is interesting to analyze the two faces (public and private) of the orator.
C.2] Neuroscience.
How the brain works and how genetic disease or "disfunction" have an influence in behaviors and relationship.
